What happens next

  1. Your request goes out

Your details go to independent garage door companies that serve your part of Seattle or the suburbs. They aren't sold to unrelated marketers; see the privacy policy.

  2. Companies contact you

They reply by phone, text or email to ask questions and offer a quote or a visit. Each company sets its own schedule, and we can't promise when, or whether, a company will respond.

  3. You compare and choose

Ask for written estimates, compare them line by line, and hire whoever you trust, or no one. No fee and no obligation.

What helps companies quote accurately

A few details in the form save a round of phone calls and bring the first number closer to the final one.

  • What the door is doing. Won't open, won't close, reverses, loud bang, crooked, off the track, grinding, opener hums or clicks, wall-button light blinking. If you heard a bang right before it stopped, say so; that often points to a spring.
  • The door's rough age. "Original to a 1950s rambler" or "replaced around 2015" both help. So does the opener brand if you can read it on the motor.
  • Single or double door, wood or steel. Size and weight drive spring and cable choices, and wood doors raise different questions than steel, especially if the bottom rail is soft or peeling.
  • Attached or detached garage. Many older Seattle houses have a detached garage off an alley. Say so, and mention if the opening is narrow or the headroom is low.
  • Is a car stuck inside? Companies treat that differently, and it helps them decide whether to offer an earlier visit.
  • Is the power out? If the opener is dead because the neighborhood is dark, say so. A company can talk you through what is safe to do before anyone drives out.
  • Where you are. Seattle neighborhood or suburb and ZIP code. Companies serving Shoreline or Lynnwood may not cover Kent, WA or Renton, WA, and the other way round.

Door stuck right now? Don't force it, and don't touch springs or cables. Torsion springs store enough energy to cause serious injury. If the opener has no power, pull the red release handle only with the door fully closed; if the door then feels heavy, won't stay up, binds or slams, stop and leave it for a technician. Mention urgency on your request and ask about after-hours fees before work starts.

Before you say yes to a company

Washington requires garage door companies to be registered with the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) as contractors, and registered contractors must show their registration number in ads (RCW 18.27.100). Look any company up on L&I's Verify a Contractor tool before you book. Ask for a written estimate that includes any trip or diagnostic fee, and afterward ask for an itemized invoice that lists the parts replaced.
